Gebirtig had hoped its message, “Don't stand there, brothers, douse the fire!” would be a call to action. Cracow's underground Jewish resistance adopted S'brent as its anthem.〔 〕 Undzer shtetl brennt was sung in the ghettos of Nazi-occupied Europe.
